Meet the leading voices in the aquarium community. They will share their insights and expertise in various talks designed for both beginners and seasoned aquarists.
MICHAEL PAUERS
Mike will be speaking on new species of cichlids from Lake Malawi, sexual selection in Lake Malawi cichlids, and the effects of hybridization on coloration and morphology in the cichlids of Lake Malawi.
Mike is a native of the Milwaukee area, having grown up in Wauwatosa. A childhood fascination with fishes led to both professional and academic interests, culminating in research projects involving the behavior, morphology, ecology, color vision, and taxonomy of cichlid fishes from Lake Malawi, Africa.
Mike is currently woring as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee School of Freshwater Science and an assistant professor at University of Wisconsin -Whitewater Department of Biology. He holds a BS in Biological Sciences from UW-Milwaukee and a PhD in Evolutionary Biology and Animal Behavior from UW-Milwaukee.
Current research interests include descriptions of new species of cichlids from Lake Malawi, sexual selection in Lake Malawi cichlids, and the effects of hybridization on coloration and morphology in the cichlids of Lake Malawi. Mike has over 20 peer-reviewed publications on the biology of fishes, with some additional papers in herpetology.
SPENCER JACK
Spencer will be speaking on [topic].
Spencer has been active within the aquaria hobby since the age of five. A true "cichlidiot", he had worked exclusively with cichlids for over thirty years. He has since expanded his horizons to include all types of tropical fish.
Spencer has been an active hobbyist within Winnipeg for a number of years. Some of his roles within the fish hobbyist community include:
Co-founder of the Aquarium Society of Winnipeg (1989), Founder and President of the Canadian Cichlid Association (2000) and Co-founder of the Dead Fish Order (2012).
Spencer now owns and operates a tropical fish business, The aFISHionados, and is still an avid fishkeeper and breeder.
BECCA GOLDRING
Dabbling in Dicrossus
Rebecca will be sharing her guide to keeping & breeding South American Checkerboard Cichlids. This talk covers topics on general care, sexing, spawning, and rearing both Dicrossus maculatus and Dicrossus filamentosus. It includes detailed experiential information with both species and will have some new material on best practices for artificial rearing.
Rebecca Goldring is social scientist and lifelong aquarium hobbyist. Her aquatic obsession led to early employment opportunities at The Aquarium Center and Roraima Tropicals, outside of Baltimore, Maryland, as well as some freelance work writing for Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine.
Rebecca currently maintains about 30 aquariums ranging in size from 5 to 300 gallons and keeps a variety
of freshwater fish, aquatic plants, and invertebrates, as well as a few outdoor ponds. She’s bred a wide variety of fish, including South American Bumblebee Cats, Checkerboard Cichlids, Freshwater Pipefish, and many varieties of tetra. You can find her on Instagram at girlsgotfisshues.
